A SERIOUS TYPO IN CURRENT ARK. LEGISLATION ALLOWS CHILDREN TO MARRY! WTF?

With parental consent, children of any age can now technically get married in the state of Arkansas. It was approved in the last session, and I guess it slipped by all the legislators. Governor Mike Beebe may have to call a special session to rectify the error.

Here is a synopsis, taken from what I read:

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. - A law passed this year allows Arkansans of any age — even infants — to marry if their parents agree, and the governor may have to call a special session to fix the mistake, lawmakers said Friday.

The legislation was intended to establish 18 as the minimum age to marry but also allow pregnant teenagers to marry with parental consent, bill sponsor Rep. Will Bond said. An extraneous "not" in the bill, however, allows anyone who is not pregnant to marry at any age if the parents allow it.

"It's clearly not the intent to allow 10-year-olds or 11-year-olds to get married," Bond said. "The legislation was screwed up."

The bill reads: "In order for a person who is younger than eighteen (18) years of age and who is *not* pregnant to obtain a marriage license, the person must provide the county clerk with evidence of parental consent to the marriage."

A code revision commission — which fixes typographical and technical errors in laws — had tried to correct the mistake, but a group of legislators said Friday the commission went beyond its powers.

What should they do? The next regular session isn't until Jan. 2009. The law became effective July 31, 2007.

leave the law the way it is, it's fate
call a special session, ASAP

Actually, it wasn't a "synopsis," it was a "copied" excerpt. Don't want to mislead anyone.

Okay, suppose two families live in Little Rock, Arkansas; and, being new citizens of the US, come from a culture where arranged childhood marriage is acceptable.
They go down and ask for a marriage license, based upon the new law, and take the matter to their local clergyman, one appointed within their subculture to perform marriages. He/She has no qualms with performing the ceremony and signing the paper, because he/she comes from the same culture that they do. Is the government going to step in and annul this wedding? Would it go to the Supreme Court? Is the scenario TOO ridiculous? You may think it so; but, I'm not so sure.

Voted : call a special session, ASAP
I just found out about this in one of my Yahoo groups, and my comment, then as now, was that I'm surprised that Jawja didn't get around to it first...

Seriously, let's get this fixed, Arkansasians, before the pedos get their sick little brains in gear.

It's not too ridiculous at all, contra. But it's still disturbing to me. Not part of any culture I'd care to know about. Kids should eb kids. Marriage is hard enough for adults these days.

sorry to be a grammar nazi, but italics and bold type are not the same thing.

that's the way it comes out in the description window; believe me, I typed in the word italicize in the bracket. It works here in comments, watch poof!

^ keith, try bracket italicize : italics bracket in the next description window you come across while writing a ballot. It will probably come up bold print, as it did for me.
