IS EXPECTING A MUSLIM TEENAGER TO PET THE DOG INSENSITIVE?

It seems that Muslims are in disagreement about whether or not they can pet dogs. I have come across diverse postings which support this, my conclusion. The associated picture accompanied an article posted by a certain Mr. Khaled. He quotes from Al-Qur'an something which is closer to my own personal beliefs about animals, and dogs in particular. The Qur'annic verse is as follows:
"There is not a thing that moves on the earth, no bird that flies on its wings, but has a community of its own like yours. There is nothing that We have left out from recording. Then they will all be gathered before their Lord."
Many of you already know that I am a dog owner, and value them and their friendship. But, I wouldn't expect a person to pet them, if they thought them unclean, or if it was personally offensive to them. I also wouldn't judge them if they had developed that conclusion, and that is exactly what one blogger on the Islam Awareness Club blog site suggested when he/she came across an article in which the columnist, and YESP coordinator Dolores Siik of Goffstown, NH made a specific reference to it. Here is what he said ("quotes" are when he quotes the columnist, or Siik):
"Siik recalled a boy from Saudi Arabia who stayed in her home for three weeks before he was permanently placed with a family. She had
recently bought a dog, a 1-year-old Australian Shepard, and the boy spent his time in Siik's home adjusting to having a dog around the
house as a pet. In Islamic thought, dogs have been seen as impure animals, and contact with dogs is sometimes prohibited in legal tradition.

"In orientation he learned it was OK to pet the dog, and he would try, but that would get the dog even more excited. It was pretty
hysterical," Siik said. "Once he went to live with the new family though, he always asked me how the dog was doing."
One wonders whether he is inquiring after the mutt --- or about Siik.

I will give you a scenario. Suppose I developed a close relationship with a "hot" Muslim chick (like aya, for instance). Even though she was visiting me on a regular basis I would not expect her to care for or love the dogs if it was not in her nature to do so.
So, what do you think?
Is it insensitive to expect your friends to love your dogs, or not?

Yes, it's insensitive.
No, heck with 'em. You don't love my dogs/cats you don't love me.

I forgot to add the chapter and verse referenced, so I give it to you again:
"There is not a thing that moves on the earth, no bird that flies on its wings, but has a community of its own like yours. There is nothing that We have left out from recording. Then they will all be gathered before their Lord." Chapter 6 "The Cattle" verse 38

Actually, I'm pretty throughly Westernized, and I ABSOLUTELY love dogs. I play with my neighbour's dogs all the time.

Besides which, most Muslims would say "yea, dogs are unclean," so I wouldn't have a problem with them not petting MY dog, but I do have a huge problem with them hurting the poor thing. They like cats, though. Cats were Muhummad's fav animal, so if you have cats, no problem.

Voted : Yes, it's insensitive.
I wouldn't expect either, some people let dogs lick their mouth, I won't do that, I remember one time I was at a friends house and their dog tried lick my face, I pushed him away and the mother of my friend said rudely "Some people are so touchy , think they are better" Whaaaat, because I don't like dogs licking my face I'm touchy? Also if she is saying I think I am better than the dog, I agree, I do think I am.

lol, larry. You and my dad, rest his soul, would have gotten along famously. I have a bit of that in me, too; but, I let MY dogs lick my face. Wouldn't expect you to though. Every time Buzz or Woody licks my face, I can just hear my dad saying with disgust, "You know, he was just licking his butt/balls a minute ago." MAG_rofl

My dogs sleep and live outside, I've built them a nice run which I keep clean. It's replete with a sunshade, a dog house, and a misting system for when it gets hot. Do I value human life over animals? Yes. That being said, I'd rather be with my dogs than many people I've met.

^ I would rather have the company of my dog than some people as well

Can't really comment here, because ou've fairly covered my field of thought on the subject. Such religious conventions have long been in effect but, at the end of the day, it's up to the individual to decide when and where they can be applied.

I cannot respect people who do not respect animals' souls.. it just means their own soul is undeveloped and insignificant to me.
by Jyl on Sun Aug 19, 07 11:33am [+]

I love animals, I love my dog, but I just don't like being licked in the face by one, I also don't like humans licking me in the face, so it's not even just a dog thing.
