At my aunts senior citzens complex they receive day old and older I'm thinking breads and doughnuts from local stores, I've seen mold, putting that aside, I think those people are old enough to know if they should eat doughnuts or not.
they're gonna get awnery and start hitting those smart-alecky youngins' with their canes.

Damn straight they should rebel. It's enough of a travesty, the way the elderly are treated as is. To hand them day-old snacks is a sin.

Treating the elderly like they're children is one of my pet peeves. I think they've lived long enough to decide whether or not they can have a freakin' doughnut. Hell, they've made it this long, let them have their doughnuts. "I'm sorry Mr. Johnson. I know you're a veteran who's put your life on the line and got shot at trying to defend innocent people. And I know you're wife managed to raise 10 kids during the great depression. But doughnuts are bad for you." It's just another case of some group of do-gooders trying to decide what's best for everyone. And day old doughnuts really arent' that bad. They must not be if the seniors are pissed off enough to raise hell about them being taken away. And if they are bad, all they gotta do is let a local news station know they're being fed old doughnuts. After running their story, I can almost guarantee that some one will donate some fresh ones for them.
^ we buy day old bread and such, it's cheaper, but they have to be checked, dough products do go bad, not a big deal if you check before offering or eating.
^ True. When us and my inlaws raised pigs, we asked the local grocery store about picking up their deli's old bread and pastries to feed to them. We were surprised when we first picked some up. Hardly a single spot of mold on any of them. We were expecting moldy and dry stuff. But because of the store's "quality standards", they don't sell it if it's over a day old. The large majority of what we got was perfectly edible and smelled as fresh as if it was baked that day. We even ate a few ourselves and they were very tasty. It shows how wasteful some places can be. Before we started picking them up, it was all thrown away when a good bit could have been used by people who would have enjoyed them.
