BEIJING (Reuters) - A Beijing factory recycled used chopsticks and sold up to 100,000 pairs a day without any form of disinfection, a newspaper said on Wednesday, the latest in a string of Chinese food and product safety scares.

Counterfeit, shoddy and dangerous products are widespread in China, whose exports have been rocked in recent months by a spate of safety scandals, ranging from pet food to medicine, tires, toothpaste and toys.

Officials raided the factory and seized about half a million pairs of recycled disposable bamboo chopsticks and a packaging machine, the Beijing News said.

The owner, identified only by his surname Wu, said he had sold the recycled chopsticks for 0.04 yuan a pair and made an average of about 1,000 yuan ($130) a day.

Wu, who had no license to sell the goods, said he had sold 100,000 pairs a day when business was good.

^ i'm tellin' ya, they're waging a secret war.

pyjama's tainted with 900 times the legal amount of formaldahyde, led paint in toys, tainted pet food, shoddy laptops, bread that is actually made out of cardboard, killer toothpaste and now this.

so again the question is -- will you buy things made in china?

i won't buy products made in china
i'll take my chances and keep buying them
i will share my wisdom below
i will distract from this ballot and go off on a tangent

I try not to buy chinese products, but sometimes it's hard to find items that's not made there.

But they don't really eat cardboard over there, so there's some good news.

I can't really say i won't BUY stuff from China because i try not to, because their products are shit. But my father in law brings back tons of cheap crap from China when he goes overseas (he's a merchant marine, so he is always in China and other countries bringing back stuff, like crappy dvd's, some work, most don't and end up in the garbage but what do you want for a buck), lol

I would be more selective, for reasons mentioned above, but I would still buy some items.

you see, I am a realist.

"I am a realist."- The calling card of a pessimist.
Get off the bandwagon and do what you can to eliminate slavery within our lifetime.

^ right on robin! you're not being a realist lcd, you're giving in. by buying it, you let them keep making poisionous stuff. that's just wrong. you're an enabler dude.

If we all worked at not buying goods marked 'China', it would be a start. Or, not.

What Larry and Socal said. If I need something immediately and all I can find is something made in China, then I'll buy it. But if I have my choice, I avoid their products when possible.

And by the way, the bread made of cardboard story turned out to be a hoax.

Problem is, so much of the stuff we buy is from China. So what would you guys suggest?
by aya on Wed Aug 22, 07 8:19pm [+]

^ simple. western companies need to stop having everything assembled in china. they're making like 75% of that stuff for us,so just move it back home or another country. problem basically solved. china wouldn't be making sqwat if western companies with all their greed didn't outsource the assembly to them. facts

I try not to buy them when possible but this is proving to be an increasingly difficult task.

I was trying to find the "US flag made in China" comment on here, but no luck. It was a classic.

I just saw on news Sponge Bob Square pants address books and journals being recalled because of lead in paint violation. Every day it's something different with products from China.

Okay, here I go...

Sure, the Chinese are proving to be a horde of unscrupulous bastards. They'll make and ship us all manner of products, without regard to proper safety measures, all for the sake of profit.

Now, where's the CPSC? You know, the Consumer Product Safety Commission? They guys who are supposed to make sure that crap such as this *doesn't* get in to our stores?

I'll tell you where.

They're sitting on their asses, completely hamstrung because of consistent budget cuts made by Our Caring Guv'mint. China's guilty. Yes. No doubt. But they had help inside the Beltway.
