if you haven't seen the movie Memento, I highly recommend it.

what if you cannot remember anything beyond 24 hours, due to some injury? (a la 50 first dates).

do you think you can function in society, using notes and reminders?

Yes

I can barely function now, with what's remaining of my memory and notes all over the place. Just found something I was supposed to send off last week. Right in front of the computer...

do i think so? i had to for quite a long time. i was totally serious when i wrote in a ballot that i literally had to carry a note with my name and address on it and if i left the house, i had to have it written down where i was going and how to get there in case i forgot along the way -- and that happend a few times. would never wish that on anyone.

and it's not just remembering things or forgetting them, its the danger that you remember things like they were as clear as yesterday but they actually happened years before. that's beyond freaky.

Having lived/living this, I would say no at least in respect to having a normal life. While head trauma can result in differing memory problems its rarely as defined as what you state above. There are different coding mechanisms the brain uses to "remember" things. Its unlikely that someone would not be able to remember "anything" beyond 24 hours. Its more likely to be patchy. A few things might be remembered but others not. The long-term memory problems would be evident through things such as remembering a meeting you were in, what you ate for breakfast and similar things. Its often not "all" memory but different types. You may do better with auditory than visual or the other way around. For me its been visual which of course makes reading very difficult because I can't remember what I read which is probably why I sometimes miss whole parts of ballots and comments. As with kev24, I wouldn't wish this on anyone even my worst enemies. I've only given you the most surface glimpse at what its like.
