WHY ARE RAP AND HIP-HOP MUSIC SALES IN DECLINE?

While music-industry sales have plummeted, no genre has fallen harder than rap. According to the music trade publication Billboard, rap sales have dropped 44% since 2000 and declined from 13% of all music sales to 10%. Artists who were once the tent poles at rap labels are posting disappointing numbers. Jay-Z's return album, Kingdom Come, for instance, sold a gaudy 680,000 units in its first week, according to Billboard. But by the second week, its sales had declined some 80%. This year rap sales are down 33% so far.

Even with the media blitz and constant hype that these so-called artists receive, sales are plummeting. How can this be possible?

U JUSS A HATA! U NO U WUN 2 BE PART OF IT 24/7!!!
More people are realizing they are mostly a bunch of clowns.
Just you wait. Fiddy and Kanye be dropping da bomb on da 9/11.

Their fifteen minutes of fame is up
Just a temporary decline - it will grow much more.
Lack of recent innovation within the genre

Voted : Rap and hiphop were never music in the first place
Rap and hiphop were a big mistake. Who promoted them to make them appear to be acceptable and 'popular'..? Was it just a silly fad that can now lie down and die..? That would be a pleasant relief. Other current 'popular' musical types can also bite the dust any time they want to.

I like some rap, I'll admit, but not all. Maybe it just ran it's course, each generation kinda has it's own style of music, I've noticed, and maybe the new generation, replacing me, don't like it. Just my guess, I really don't know reasons why.

What started as "kids making rhymes and having a good time degenerated to glorification of undesirable types, thugs, wanna be gangsters and negative role models demeaning themselves and women while bragging and boasting about material things...while some of it had catchy beats and bass lines, I wouldn't classify most of it as music nor would I pay to see most of it performed...this generation of hip-hoppers missed out on real talented musicians, entertainers and performers...in short it's just played out...

I agree, to an extent, with thesoothsayer, that glorification of violence, misogyny and homophobia (to name but three) surely put some people off some aspects of rap.

As a former professional musician myself, I'm not particularly into rap and hip-hop (some of it is wonderful but it has a long way to go), but I acknowledge that it has been probably the most creatively expansive area of music in the last two decades.

It's not dead by any means. In fact, it's likely to penetrate the mainstream far more in the next decade.

^ keith, I sincerely hope not. Because of it, I can't walk into a record store without somneone askign me if I want to hear the latest Young Jeezy or Lil' Jon, whoever these lifeforms are. I'm tired of having to blow their tiny minds by asking where the Leonard Cohen CDs are.
