You make it an either/or thing. I work with my doctors on what is acceptable. For example, there are usually alternatives to whatever medication may be causing side effects. Also, with most medical problems the doctor (especially if a good one) will strongly suggest lifestyle changes in addition to any medication. Most people don't listen when the doctors tells them this stuff. Very view of the herbal "medications" do work as advertised. There are a few and sometimes a doctor may suggest them. Thing like glucosamine, etc. Regardless of any of this I would still see the doctor in order to monitor the disease. Sometimes feeling better doesn't mean you necessarily are. It may actually be getting worse.

I opted to trust the doctors and take the meds. As a result, I lose four to eight hours out of every day just trying to get my head screwed on straight. Can't walk straight, can't hold anything without support, can barely see past my own nose. Look around first. Look around often. And I hope that all is well with you.
What Fiddle said. It's really not a yes or no question. It depends on the illness, the doctor, the treatment available, etc...

I would keep my options open, by consulting a traditional doctor but also seeking alternative advice from sources that I trust. The more options, the better. And then I would decide on the combination of approaches that works for me, that I am comfortable with. Since it would be my health and my life at stake, there is no better person than me to make the decision about how to take care of it. It is up to me to find the best sources of advice that meet my requirements.
'ok, without divulging too much of my problems' Dude, divulge! It's apparently not me, but you got some good friends on here :o) It helps to talk.
