My grandmother used to talk about Totie Fields, I had no idea who she was, but I liked the name Totie, so I chose it for our dog, but usually just random things.
Voted : Depends on what it looks like
I had a cat, back when I lived in New York. The day I got her as a kitten, I looked at her and said, "Patricia." It stuck.

What ever pops into my head usually. If they've got a specific type of personality or look, I'll sometimes name them according to that. I've got cats with people names, a cat named Bullet because of how the would run when he was younger, one named Poco because she's little, and a dog named Rita who was a hurricane Rita evacuee that found her way to me after someone dumped out out.
That should have been "how he would run".
I give them the names of famous Celtic people, names of mythical Celts, or interesting words from the Gaelic language.
Voted : a combination of factors
Woody acts like a "cowboy" mentality, jumping in first, then thinking about it. Buzz is a "space cadet," but he gets real indignant when things don't go his way. But, in reality? We picked the names first, then picked a dog from the pound who fit the profile for which we were looking.
Voted : What you intend for the pet. Like worker or dinner.
i based the name of my dog on a meal i had just before i adopted him. weird, i know.
