COMMENTS:
I'll answer your question soon (although you have chopped up parts of his letter). I would recommend answering this ballot ballot #85585 first. Of course, voting can be anonymous.
Let me see if this works.
I'll go with Dr. Jung and Mr. Wilson on this one.

Can't really say. Don't do either.

humans seek an expanded consciousness. right or wrong - drugs and alcohol obviously alter consciousness. is there any benefit to consciousness altered in this way? I suppose that depends on the individual. In our society - it appears that these substances are mostly abused and the results are not pretty, to the say the least. However, intoxication under certain circumstances can relax or stimulate the mind and allow it to wander into areas that might not otherwise be discovered. That is not necessarily a bad thing, regardless of our culturally learned distaste or perhaps mistrust of mind-altering substances.
Voted : Yes, drugs are spiritual, we look to them for answers.
Thanks FF, Truth, Lightreaper. And thanks FF for the letter. Wow, didn't know anyone had a copy of it handy on their computer. I just realized that Jung apparently wrote that letter 6 months before he died. He was a great man. Lightreaper, Well stated: thank you for bringing the conversation back to center, nice level headed answer, too. Karma forthcoming. I definitely feel this to be an area where we must be ever vigilant in seeking balance, and while there are several references against strong drink in ancient literature, one writer balanced his admonitions with Proverbs 31:6-7. Excuse the example, but please understand that I only speak and give examples from that with which I have experience. It is not to elevate one religion/cultural tradition over another. Is it any wonder that in lots of ancient cultures, the "medicine man/woman" was also the "spiritual leader?"
Voted : No, drugs are not spiritual.
Mind altering substances can be calming, "emboldening", inhancing (your thought process), or the exact opposite...but they all make you more receptive of feelings or thoughts both positive or negative...I believe it's no realistic to think you can "connect" with your "higher power" if you are "high"...It reminds me of drug induced murders when the perpetrator(s) declares "God told me to do it"...
^soothsayer, I sympathize with your comment. I also think that possibly the drug (be it alcohol, or some other substance) may actually becomethe higher power for some.
^you have captured the essence of alcoholism and drug addiction with that statement.
