SHOULD ARTISTS SUPPORT OTHER ARTISTS' WORK / INSPIRATION?

I have no illusions that I am the new Rembrandt. But I put my heart and soul into my work, and I totally support my artist friends. 'You're so talented, you should be creating something beautiful,' 'Go for it, girl!', 'What can I do to help make it happen?' . . . etc.

That said, many of my friends who call themselves artists (but actually haven't created anything in years) are not supportive of my efforts. After I have asked about -- and listened to -- their news, they will sometimes (not always) ask what's new with me. If I tell them about a minor triumph -- like an art licenser buying my images for murals, posters, puzzles, etc. -- the response is usually, "If I just put my mind to it, I'd be doing that," -- or, "Why isn't Bruce (my husband) doing this? He's REALLY talented!"

About ten years ago, I read a book called "The Artist's Way," by Julia Cameron. Her philosophy is that creative people should support each other, because putting yourself out there creatively takes so much courage and hard work. And creativity can cover so many things, including cooking, raising children ... in short, anything a person is passionate about.

So, should artists be supportive of other artists for 'JUST DOING IT'?

you go Mojo! of course you are talented. I wish i could have you paint your water murals on my upstairs bathroom walls - however i've tiled them all....
Maybe you're not rembrandt - but your artwork is still beautiful and has a place in making our surroundings more pleasant. Keep it up! every use of our talents draws more from us. express yourself! sometimes others are just jealous - but we needn't be - we all need to encourage each other to draw out our visions of beauty and share them with each other.

I'm looking a book of poetry by Lawrence Welsh entitled NEW SHOUTS AT BROKEN DREAMS. Trust me on this one, these are the worst poems EVER written in the English language.
It's obvious that Larry got his friends (other artists) to review his poems. First, a sample of Larry's work:

ENCITAS
drive
hustle
of surf boy
shut down
in trees
we buy
crazy bud
and run
circle west
to follow
the sun.

Now a review of Larry's poetry by another so-called artist named Michael C Ford:
LAWRENCE WELSH DOESN'T PEN AND INK HIS POEMS, HE USES FINGERNAILS AND MARTYS BLOOD. HE'S A SLEEPING INSOMNIAC WITH BOTH EYES OPEN. WATCH OUT FOR THESSE POEMS, FOR THEY ARE MADE WITH A PASSIONATE, WITTY, INDOMITABLE DYNOMITE.

WTF? Did I miss something? Artists supporting other artists is one thing, but when it turns into a circle jerk it's time to find another gig. Larry and Michael would have served society better had they sold used cars in Encino. Instead, they stoked each other and chose to believe they were great poets.

Could they be jealous?

^What skylab said. Maybe you are more successful or more creative than your artist friends, which could make them more envious of your work?
Don't let your "friends" discourage you, you have a unique style!

Yeah, they should, as simple as that.

I was up for O level art at school but left before taking it, which is the only thing I regret about leaving school early (I started my own business at 15, Beer sex and money was more important to me at that time, lol)

My cousin went on to art college and tried to convince me to go with him (as in his opinion I was better than him). He's now a set designer for movies (bstard!!) he designed and made all the props for the wallis and grommit films plus many tv adverts. When he comes home he still goes on about I should be doing what he's doing. My Ma always goes on about it too. I just didn't like the idea of being a skint student for years before (or if) you actually start making any money.

Readin' there about LR's mural wish, the thing about doin' that is you can't take it with you if you move. In my first house I spent weeks painting dolphins jumpin' out the sea, all around the walls in the bathroom. It pissed me off when I moved.

Years later I went to a party and ended up back at my old house. It had changed owners twice and both had decorated the bathroom around my mural, without touching it, lol. That and the attention I recieved when they realised I was the one who painted it, made me feel really proud. :o)

Maybe I should have kept it up. *misty eyed*

well brit - it's never too late.
I always wanted to learn how to dance (like really dance - not just throw my weight around) and a year or two ago i started taking classes. i wish i had done that MANY years ago - i'm having so much fun. (and i'd have looked better 20 years ago.....)

I don't see why artists compete the negative way they do. Each artist brings something unique which may appeal to some people to whom another form of art does not appeal. Unlike cashiers or secretaries, there is always room for artists. I think artists and artisans should encourage and support each other because when they are in the company of other artists, they can become more inspired not necessarily to copy but to create. It is also good Karma, and it is good common sense to network.

Another thing--if a person is ungiving or unloving, or afraid, all tight and secretive inside himself or herself, their artwork will show this negativity. It will lack something. Artists need other artist's feedback.

Wouldn't it be sad if someone hides his talent all his life, works on his art in secret, and all this time he was out of touch, and he finally presents his life's work and its a dud?

Yeah they should.

I got an A in art at GCSE when I was sixteen, and it was by far my favourite subject at school. After a trip to the Tate Modern Art Gallery in London my mind was made up, I wanted to go to Art school. I told my Dad and he said that only poofters went to art school and that I would probably be man raped if I went. I was sixteen at the time and actually believed him, so I didn't go. If I had gone I probably would of been the new Rembrandt, or at least that’s what I tell myself, every night, while I cry myself to sleep, and dream of what might have been...

Ha ha I didn't know you were that old britvic lol, I think my great granddad took 'o' levels too ;)

Now I'm jealous of all that talent.

In any community, artists should support one another. Several of the groups I'm in online are specifically for writers to encourage each other. The one I'm most involved in is basically nothing more than constant mutual encouragement, because most of us have so little time to write.

Again, after the fact (and forgive me for this, mojo), talent such as yours is beyond scope or question.
by Truthseeker013 on Fri Aug 31, 07 7:14am [+]

Lol, Winston the last O levels in UK were in 1988, but I'm way too young (and good looking :o) to be your grandad. Do the maths if you like. 023
