it takes times to fly these days.

drive to airport, find parking, shuttle to terminals, check in baggage, line to counter, get frisked and/or cavity check, wait in terminal, board, land, wait for baggage, wait for shuttle to rental, find car, drive out.

on the way back, you repeat the process.

what is the maximum distance you would drive, rather than fly?

I don't mind driving a long distance and I like seeing the small towns that I pass through. I can stop off somewhere when I want to and I don't have to listen to crying children. Besides, I avoid flying whenever possible because of all the hassles it includes. The furthest I've driven before is about 1800 miles.
