I took spanish and german in high school/college, and learned tiny bits of russian, japanese and chinese through friends.

now I can barely speak english.

Recently I had to communicate with someone in one of those languages, and I felt like an idiot.

Now I listen to webcasts in various languages to keep up.

how do you retain languages learned in youth?

Constant practice or immersion
practice, practice, practice
War and cultural repression
I didn't retain them

also, have you ever spoken to someone in one language, then incorporate a bit of another language in your conversation by mistake?

I studied a little Spanish and Latin in school, and a lot of French. The latter, I kept up only because I visited the country, or kept acquaintances with those fluent in the language.

And yes, all too often. I tend to toss in whatever language I speak as a first language. (You have to hear it to believe it- it's like nothing I've ever heard before anywhere. It's close to Portugese.)

I know you guys are all waitin' on my sagely advice. Being as I am the goodest speacher on this site and all. Don't worry 'bout learin' a new language. Pretty soon I'll have the whole world speakin' American.

I wanted to learn German at High School, but it wasn't an available subject at the time, so I took Japanese instead.

I can remember nearly all of the basic Hiragana - ひらがな, most of the Katakana - カタカナ, and a few Kanji - 漢字 Chinese characters.

I can talk and write a basic conversation but that's all. I just don't practice enough.

^ lol True.

Spanish is handy in some areas (like here in Texas). And it helps if you want certain jobs. But to be honest, I've lived in Texas all my life, can speak it, but have never had a need for it other than a few very basic words.

My sister took French in highschool and was given the usual criticism..."Unless you're going to France, Spanish would be more practical here". Well, years later, she's used that French more during research a hell of a lot more than she has Spanish.

Besides, the Mexicans here don't speak the text book Spanish that is taught in schools. Most look at you funny when you start speaking it.
