Voted : this is cruel and harsh
it really is. it seems way over the top to me. kind of like something out of some surreal horror movie.
I suspect this only applies to certain individuals with a propensity to violence. Restraint of criminals with shackles and other devices is common and is used to protect both the criminal and others. Spain has a massive problem with illegal immigrants trying to and often reaching the Canary Islands. Le Figaro (French paper) has reported up 1300 in one weekend. There is heavy organized crime (gang) involvement (up to 80% according to the EU and the UNODOC (United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime). Many illegal immigrants die on the way over (perhaps 3000 drowning per year). Of course, Spain certainly isn't an angel here. In the enclaves of Ceuta and Melila (on the tip of Africa), they have erected fences and used other security measures to keep illegals out. They have also been cited numerous times for human rights violations by Human Rights Watch. So this news isn't surprising. So my opinion? Obviously something has to be done. The organized crime involvement is a major issue. Spain needs to grant basic human rights to the illegal immigrants prior to deporting them (doctors, lawyers, food, etc). However... will something really significant be done? Probably not. Spain takes advantage of the cheap labor.
I wonder what part of "illegal" everyone who voted cruel doesn't understand. They voluntarily attempted to break the law of another country. They know the price they pay if caught.
Voted : this is justified and okay
The straightjackets and helmets are being used to protect the people who are willingly breaking the law from themselves? It seems like Spain is coddling their invaders to me.

If they get violent, wouldn't handcuffs be enough? Why straightjackets?
so bongo, in your view it would be cool if lets say a teenager swiped a candy bar for them to put him in a straightjacket? come on. once you cross that line there's no turning back. so if you got a speeding ticket you broke the law -- should we put you in a straightjacket? no way.
Actually handcuffs are worse than straightjackets, they really hurt your wrists and cops don't put them on gently...i mean they are usually pissed off when they're putting them on you
^ ever see someone in a straitjacket? so what, the people they put them in are just going to willingly and calmly allow themselves to be restrained with a device that literally ties them up so they cannot move their arms or hands at all? sick. personally, they're going to have to really subdue the person to get a straitjacket on them. not my idea of humanistic. it's actually kind of sadistic and surreal.

Just another example of fear overrunning common sense, IMO.
