Brenda Nesselroad-Slaby was warned by a former administrator at the preschool attended by Cecilia's 5-year-old sister, Allison, not to leave her toddler in the car by herself. The Union Township Police report released Wednesday provided vivid details of the drama that unfolded at Glen Este Middle School on Aug. 23 after Cecilia was found in the rear passenger compartment of the car. Nesselroad-Slaby expressed "shock and panic" upon hearing Cecilia was in her car, according to a witness statement released by police. After learning Cecilia was dead, the Symmes Township mother "curled up on (the) floor" and "was hysterically crying," the report said. Apparently consumed with guilt over forgetting she had left her daughter in the car for eight hours on a day when the outside temperature approached 100 degrees, Nesselroad-Slaby told police "she did not deserve to live," wrote Detective John Pavia. Officers drove the distraught mother to Clermont Mercy Hospital, where she was evaluated before being released later that night. During her interview with police, Nesselroad-Slaby, 40, the assistant principal at Glen Este, "stated several times that she changed her routine and got doughnuts for the staff ... so they could start the year off right, " Pavia wrote. The educators were preparing for the Aug. 27 opening of school. "I think as soon as I got those doughnuts, I got focused on getting in school for some reason," Nesselroad-Slaby told police in a later interview. A receipt from the Busken Bakery at 956 Old Ohio 74, which is a mile from the school, shows Nesselroad-Slaby paid $59.22 for eight dozen doughnuts at 6:54 a.m. Once at school, "I made two trips in with the doughnuts, and then I took the juice (brought from home) into the cafeteria," she said. "Brenda Slaby admitted to investigators that she never thought of the child from the point where she changed lanes at Eastgate Boulevard" to go pick up the doughnuts, Detective Sgt. Scott Blankenship wrote. "That was my routine," Nesselroad-Slaby told police. "I should have just followed it." The momentary lapse, Nesselroad-Slaby said, caused her to forget about Cecilia. Cecilia died of heat stroke, according to an autopsy performed the next day. The temperature could have reached 149 degrees in the car, which had its windows up. "The child's body was wet and extremely hot to the touch," Puckett wrote of the time police arrived at the school. Even after cool water was run over Cecilia, her core body temperature was 110.7 degrees about an hour after she was discovered, according to the office of Clermont County's coroner, Dr. Brian Treon. Normal body temperature is about 98.6 degrees. Cecilia's eyes "were slightly open and appeared hazed," Puckett wrote. Her skin was blistered. The Cincinatti DA said Tuesday that he wouldn't prosecute Nesselroad-Slaby in the death of Cecilia because the only charge that might have fit the circumstances was child endangering - and this case didn't meet the legal standard. WHAT??? I'm a bit confused. This woman's little girl died a slow and horrible death while she tended to her workday chores, which included making several trips to buy donuts for her staff. How do you just 'forget' about your little girl? Some reporters are trying to blame the whole incident on infant car seats being in the back, making it more likely for a parent to do just that. Huh?
