SHOULD SWASTIKA, ONTARIO BE RENAMED?

Ontario has a town called Swastika. It was named that in 1911, for good luck, after a gold rush. (Before the Nazis arrived, the swastika was considered a symbol of good luck in many cultures.)

However, now that the swastika is heavily regarded as a symbol of the Nazis, in your opinion, is it time that the town change its name, or should they keep it?

Yes, because the current name presents a bad stigma on the town.
No because the town was named SWASTIKA years before the Nazis ever existed.
Let's ask the Swastikians (Swastikans?)

As I understand it, the Nazi swastika is reversed, to indicate power or death or something not good-luckish. I think the Jewish population in Swastika, Ontario should be asked what they think. I guess since I have not heard of people being upset with the name until today, it isn't considered a big deal.

Kev, Bhuddism? You mean Hinduism. There are a lot of bad names for towns. Did you know there is an actual German town called 'Fucking?' There's another town in Canada called 'Dildo'
by aya on Mon Sep 10, 07 9:33am [+]

^ hinduism, sorry. now what would be cool if towns fucking and dildo were right next to each.

The swastika (from Sanskrit svástika ????????? ) is an equilateral cross with its arms bent at right angles, in either right-facing (?) or left-facing (?) forms. The term is derived from Sanskrit svasti, meaning well-being. The Thai greeting sawasdee is from the same root and carries the same implication.

Buy a few Victorian-era copies of the collected works of Rudyard Kipling. The books are decorated with a band of Indian-style swastikas along the top border of each volume. Yet, I've seen idiots become offended at this in public, when I was reading them out in the park.

No one back in 1911 had ever heard of a Nazi, because they didn't exist! If the name was good enough back then, they should stick with it now, and not cave under to stupidity.

Makes me want to develop a subdivision and incorporate it as "Leni-freaking-Riefenstahl."

I live in Swastika - we pronounce it swasteeka - not the same as the german swassticka. Anyway - fuck off - we had the name first and politically correct historical revisionism is crap in my book
