I think it's been that way here for years, few of my friends parents had to pay fines because their kids missed a lot of school and if I remember correctly, they were threatened with jail time.
^ wow. tough school system. i could see them calling in child services or something if kids are out too much, but jail time? kind of harsh.
Wait! This is ridiculous! How can the parents be punished if they send the kids to school? What if the kids go off on thier own volition? What if the kids don't respect the parents and don't care if they go to jail? What if the kids are being bullied and so skip school? There are issues here not being addressed.

^ good points.
I agree with what aya said, however, there are also parents who just cant be bothered to get out of bed in the morning to take young children to school or to make sure older ones get up for school. There should be help available for parents of unruley children to ensure the child attends but punishments for those who cant be bothered to even seek help in such matters, they are not doing the kids any favours by letting them skip thier education, it just creates a never ending cycle.

They should find a better way to deal with the issue. Perhaps communication with the parents?

I mean jail time is a little "MUCH" but like my mom never made us go to school...and they could have at least try to make us go... I have a 17 year old brother who is a complete loser because my mom just never made him go and he had no real excuse. She would say "well i tell him to go but he won't" i would say well BEAT THAT BOY MOM! She lets my brothers do anything, and it's not cool

What if the kid misses ten days on purpose out of spite? What if their kids have psychological problems? Not everyone lives in a Norman Rockwell home. In fact, I'd say that people who DON'T are the majority these days.
^ so true. hmmm, so if you were pissed at your parents, would you do that?
Yeah, I think it's more directed on those parents who are just too lazy to get their kids off to school or let them skip, many kids after parents drop them off will go in the front door of the school and go out the back. They have hearings, parents not just thrown in jail without being heard, at that time, it's determined what category the parents are in. This is the case in the Elmira school district. Some parents in my old school would take their kids directly to the principle's office and they are sent to class from there, if they then skip class , it's obvious not because the parents didn't' try.
Also they might be hoping for the opposite of what nuck said, kids would go to school rather than see their parents go off to jail, kinda risky though, parents could also play that card and threaten their kids with juvenile hall if they continued skipping.
