Voted : of course it's absurd to believe the government controls the news
But I'm sure Valerie Plame knows they try, on occasion.
i read these same arguments on here and from what i read no one's ever given evidence of this supposed control
I wouldn't say that the government runs the media but rather that they both belong to the same owner - corporations with special interests.

Wake up, folks. Yikes! Another fun conspiracy afoot.

So now I can comment? I tried comment before, and it wouldn't let me. Anyway, I wouldn't say government has overt control, but heavily influences. CBC here is influenced by the PM. Is there anything to suggest that say, CNN or Fox isn't heavily influenced by the government. I would say corporations are a bigger problem. Fox, for example, and the Izzy Asper family in Canada controls Global, and many other papers in Canada, such as the National Post. Asper been openly biased about how stupid Canadians are, and how much he, and Conrad Black are for censorship. Taht is why readership for their papers went down

"what about the internet? no on controls that sucker. you can go to any foreign news site and sites like drudgereport link directly to forein press" Actually, Google has been known to be mired in controversy regarding censorship. They've been blasted for censorship in China, and there is nothing to suggest that Google wouldn't do the same here.

I should also point out, that, the US government does have an inordinate amount of influence over the internet. For example, the US feds have a master database over top level domains. In 2005, the US government vetoed .xxx as a district for pornographers, which is something no other government in the world has the power to do. So this suggests a heavy influence.

No government should have such control over the internet, as it suggests the Internet has monopolistic control that could be detrimental to free speech

Ever hear of a little group called the FCC? Government doesn't control all media, but don't think they try to control it as much as they can.

a free press is prerequisite in a free society if you wish to have a means to "keep an eye" on what your government is up to...while I agree it is impossible to control the media as a whole, there are "unsavory" characters bent on purchasing "key" elements of the "press/media" with the intent of presenting the news in a light which may favor certain individuals in power, or paint and label others as undesireable...the younger generations are far more likly to look at all the news from many different sources than older people with fixed habits and are unwilling to embrace or even give many of the newer services the credit they deserve...what the Government does do and do well, is to set the tone on what we think and talk about...but not the conclusions we may draw...a good example is all the hoopla that comes before the President is scheduled to may a speech, all the second quessing and commentary that goes on to the point of "ad nauseam"...
