Thomas Jensen of Braintree, Massachusetts received three days in jail for paying a 50 cent toll using tokens. He said that New Hampshire broke a contract by refusing to accept the tokens after January of next year.

I won't even mention Enron, but a lot of white collar types know how to get away with stealing. I asked a store for my cell phone to close my account at the end of the contract. The store closed my account right away and charged hundreds of dollars for closing the account before the end of the contract. We paid for gap insurance for our car, but it took months for my insurance company to deal with it after an accident, and there was a deadline we didn't know about for the gap insurance. So they took our money and gave us nothing. And when I moved from New Jersey to Pennsylvania, New Jersy made many "mistakes" in changing my tax witholding to Pennsylvania. I never got that straightened out.

So are white collar criminals better at getting away with theft than blue collar criminals?

The DMV did somewthing like this to my boyfriend. There is a catch 22 when you get a new car and have to get a license for it. They fine you for the time you have the car registered with no license. There is a provision they don't tell you about where you can bring the registration in and get a temporary pass so you don't get fined.
My boyfriened found out ahead of time and got the pass. When he went to get his license, he was AUTOMATICALLY fined. He showed them his pass and they got acted pissed. Anyway, he walked out with his license AND the money they tried to STEAL from him.

IMO, they simply hire better lawyers to help them skate on the charges. I once saw a stat that said that Ken Lay's lawyers billable rates ran in the five figures.

Per hour.
