ASIA IS MORE STRESSFUL THAN THE WEST! DO YOU AGREE?

Okay, there is a stereotype in the West that Asians are more simple than Westerners and that Asia is a much more calm, relaxed, spiritual and serene place than that of the West.

This is NOT true! Asian cities are so much more crowded than Western cities- there's a lot of pushiness and impatience from these crowds. Everywhere is just so noisy and busy. To add to this is all the road traffic- MUCH WORSE than anywhere in the West. LA, NY, Paris, Rome, etc do NOT compare to the stress of that in Asia. Even in the countryside there was traffic. And everyone is in such a rush- slamming their hands on their car horns and so forth. Consumerism? All over the place actually. And then there is the pollution. There is SO much, it's all overwhelming, there is no Western counterpart to compare it to. And Asians have probably the strongest work ethic I have ever seen- there is a strong societal expectation that one should be working so hard to such a large extent (much more so than the West).

I found Asian countries therefore to be more busy, animated, noisy, polluted, and stressful than the West. I don't understand therefore why the rhetoric continues inside the Western world that Asia is serene, spiritual, calm, quiet, not overly concerned with work and is more 'down to earth' and naturalistic in comparison to the West which is supposedly stressful, materialistic, busy, loud, work-obsessed, and polluted. That rhetoric is not true in my opinion. Asia arguably is more hectic than the West.

Do you agree? If so, why do you think the sterotypical dichotomy of a serene Asia and a stressful West continues?

I agree, and I don't know why the false West/East stereotype continues
I agree with you, but I can explain why the false West/East stereotype continues below in comment
I disagree with you. Asian cities are completely peaceful- the West should learn from them
I don't think those stereotypes are wide spread

COMMENTS:
I don't know why so-called 'idealists' in the West continue the rhetoric that Asia is more peaceful and relaxed than the Western world. It's simply not true in my honest opinion.

I think it's just more occidentalist nonsense that has little to do with reality.

Voted : I agree with you, but I can explain why the false West/East stereotype continues below in comment
I think because many Westeners feel the need to be so self-critical that it has spread and the myths have taken root, and have seemingly become fact. I agree with you by the way. It seems very popular to believe the worst about the West, no matter how unfounded and to believe the best about Asian (Eastern) culture, no matter how unrealistic. No culture or society is perfect.

Depends on the individual... some people actually enjoy prison.

I think the idea of serene easterners
applies mainly to sects that meditate, not to all or most of them.

I think perhaps you're generalising a little too much in Asia. You mention LA, NY, Paris, Rome as traffic hotspots and say that 'Asia' is worse.

Maybe Tokyo, Seoul, Beijing, etc are similarly congested but the vast majority of Asia is rural and quiet. That said, most of America and Europe is still rural too.

Case in point. Keithsheen. You're the one making assumptions. For all you know, Eurotopia has traveled extensively throughout Asia. Have you? Have you traveled extensively throughout the United States and Europe for that matter? Thank you for proving my point though.

keithsheen - Actually the rural areas I was in in Asia had plenty of traffic.

Don't get me wrong though- I really like Asia. It's a great place. But the fact of the matter is, Asians in reality deal with the same stresses of modernity as Westerners do. Actually, arguably more so.
