Perhaps EL, but what if Ted Stevens, Alberto Gonzales or Donald Rumsfeld replaces him? Or even an intellectual equal of his like Dan Quayle or even some more radical neocon? It could actually be worse. I think that would be difficult to achieve but unfortunately not an impossibility.
