CAN ANYONE BELIEVE ANYTHING REPORTED IN THE NEWS?

[+] serious ballot by patch22us
created Thu Oct 25, 07

Recently a ballot was posted about Mattel's toy recalls. Researching the topic, it was disturbing at how many varying "facts" there were.

Some news sites indicated that the total recall was 19 million toys and about half (9 - 10 million) were due to lead pain, while the other half was due to a design flaw using magnets.

Other news sites said that the total recall was 21 million toys, with half being recalled for lead paint and the other half being recalled due to lead paint AND the magnets.

Still others reported the total recall was about 19-20 million, with about 17 million being recalled due to the design flaw with the magnets and about 2.2 million being recalled due to lead paint.

What the heck? I'm usually the type to do research on multiple sources and the scary part is that of the above conflicting reports, all came from major news sources, including: NY Times, BBC, CNN, Bloomberg, The London Times, etc.

If all of these major news sources can report such different accounts, how can we feel confident with any of the facts they present?

Part of it could be because on the internet you can read so many different sources, but most are from varying times. e.g. maybe as the facts came out, the news was updated, but in a Google search, you may be looking at an older article?

I don't know. All I know is that I question everything and this is one of the reasons why.

Do you trust the facts you are being given in the news?

Yes, I trust the news
No, I don't truse the news

COMMENTS:
I find that with the internet, you can find news that you WANT to find and then you can find news that is old and outdated. In this case, it seems to have been a case of the story developing. So if you do a Google search, you might get a million results and some might be older versions on the story...if that news story has had movement or more facts come out, then an older archived news source is naturally going to be "wrong," as it were. It's really important to try and find the most current news.

Voted : No, I don't truse the news
Back when I was on my HS newspaper, my student advisor gave me this sage advice regarding the news.

"Don't read a newspaper. Read *every* newspaper you can get your hands on. Don't watch *a* news broadcast. Watch *all8 of them. Let no one single source shape your thoughts and opinions."

(This is for all who cling to the mantle of Faux- eh, Fixed- uh, Fox News. Yeah. That's the ticket.)

You have to use as many sources as possible and read in between the lines...depending on the ownership of some sources, they will either amplify or water down facts to suit their agenda, and that goes for all of them...

^ Yep, every one of them. None of them are innocent. We rag on Fox news, but I've even seen things there than other networks won't touch. That makes the others just as bad as they are.

"..that other networks...", I meant.
