content editable by everyone.

so any 12 year old high on halloween candy can go and deface and delete main link pages. Each time they do that, I imagine someone goes in and clean it up.

I am surprised that the site looks so put together and clean.

how do they do that?

Lots of history backups for reverting vandalism
Continual peer review
All changes are tracked allowing easy review
Lots of eyeballs enable quick identification of problems and bias
Software is used to track changes so bad edits are quickly identified
Articles are built by consensus
Lots of obsessive mods
Vast majority of editors abide by the 5 pillars

I realize that. but until someone goes in and change it, it stays defaced, right?

There must be a lot of people who take their time maintaining that site....

^^ well, that is indeed admirable.

you seems to know wikipedia pretty well, how do they deal with someone who goes and deface pages for a hobby? let's say an automatic script that goes and defaces 10,000 pages an hour, using variety of proxy servers? (so IP block is not possible)
by LCD on Mon Nov 05, 07 5:33pm [+]

I think a firewall and other security things like that can help prevent that. Wiki also has numerous people who can and probably have written scripts. There are various scripts used by people on wiki to track changes.

You can contact the owners of the proxy servers and let them know their system is being abused.

Try these pages for starters:

meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Vandalbot
