HOW MUCH POWER DOES THE EVANGELICAL CHURCH HAVE IN AMERICA?

[+] serious ballot by winston
ACTIVE Fri Nov 16, 07 - Sat Nov 15, 08

Walking down the street yesterday and bumped into some Polish girl selling the Big Issue. Had a quick flick through and found an article about the power of the Evangelical Church in the United States. The author of the article pointed out similarities between religious fanatics in the far-east and Evangelicals in the mid-west. Apparently there are such things as Jesus camps where children are taught to fear God and his wrath. The author was also under the assumption that the Republican Party has been manipulating the Evangelical voters to force through anti-abortion laws and to gain approval for war in Iraq. Is the Evangelical Church really this influential in America or is the author of this article merely exaggerating? I genuinely have very little knowledge on this issue and am simply interested in an Americans perspective.

The Author was telling the truth
The author was exaggerating
In any case the 'gellies' have far too much influence esp. in parts of America

I would like to point out that I did actually buy the big-issue before reading it - i am not in the habit of screwing some poor girl out of £1.50.

Sounds close enough for rock 'n' roll. I'm living in it.

I recall a story from an online outlet about five years ago, stating that evangelical leaders had more access to Mister Bush than world leaders.

A bit of an exxageration. They have influence over the Republican party only and nationally, their influence is really only in parts of the South and the Mid-west. In the major population centers along the East and West coast, they have none. And since we have freedom of Religion, they can grow as large as they can or shrink if no one is listening.

I read recently that what influence they did have has been greatly diminished, since Republicans realized that the Evangelical Church is not nearly as big or powerful as the media made them out to be and Politicians have less to fear from them in terms of votes.

What Patch said.

Even in parts of the South, they don't have as much power as some let on. I can name at least a hundred die-hard Christian conservatives right now, in just my home town, who wish that the evangelists would get the hell out of politics.

Like was said, their power is diminishing. They actually made some sense at one time and did some good for the Republican party, but now many of the evangelists are expressing views that not all Christians and/or Republicans agree with.

Keep believing that, folks.

I read that this is less true than before, but for years evangelicals had quite a bit of political clout, and voted for Bush in large numbers.

Oh, I believe what I stated. I know pastors who've gone from Republican to Democrat, simply because they don't want the conservative evangelists representing them. Things are bad in the political/church bed, but not quite as bad as media would have people believe. But then what do I know, I don't watch the TV news. I listen to, talk with, and observe my community.

'Gellie' is of course short for 'evangelical': Not much 'filling', but mostly a big Hole in the central!
