Things that were considered science fiction 50 years ago are reality today.

Because of science fiction (Arthur C Clarke in particular here), no one can copyright the satellite. He wrote of it years before Sputnik ever went up.

I think so (to some extent anyway - particularly future technology). Jules Verne and H.G. Wells thought up several technological inovations that later became reality (derigibles, submarines, tanks, bombers, genetic engineering). Edward Belamy thought up the concept of radio in a novel in the 1880s. There's a lot of speculation in science fiction, and sometimes speculation inspires reality.
