SHOULD MORE KIDS GET SHOT UP WITH HIV?

According to an article in "The Week", French scientists are using a non-lethal version of the HIV virus into a tool to deliver healthy genes. Researchers at France's national biomedical agency have used a non-lethal piece of HIV to heal two 7-year-old boys with adrenoleukodystrophy (ALD), a condition caused by a mutation on the X chromosome in blood cells. Researchers "reprogramed" the genes in the boys' bone marrow using the partial AIDS virus. After the defective bone marrow was killed off using chemotherapy and replaced with the gene-modified marrow, the boys grew new blood and marrow cells. Approximately 25 percent of these cells were healthy and normal. If the boys don't suffer serious side effects, the same technique may be used to deliver healthy genes to sufferers of leukemia and sickle cell anemia.

Yes, if they have certain genetic conditions.
No, it seems too dangerous a treatment to me.

COMMENTS:
I certainly wouldn't be willing to risk it. I give lots of credit to the brave souls willing to try something that could be a breakthrough treatment.

I think these kids were going to die and as they say it's 'non-lethal', the actual deadly part of the virus has been cleaned out. Imo if there's a slight chance of it working it's worth a try.

I'm a scientist by education, and the notion of playing Deity worries me daily.

This is pretty awesome. Believe me, if you oops kill some kid with ALD while trying to cure him he's no worse off than he already was. It's only playing God if you believe in God, otherwise it's just science. I think you fear God, not science.

If it works, and they don't wind up with AIDS, I think it is all right...
