America has told Britain that it can “kidnap” British citizens if they are wanted for crimes in the United States. A senior lawyer for the American government has told the Court of Appeal in London that kidnapping foreign citizens is permissible under American law because the US Supreme Court has sanctioned it. Until now it was commonly assumed that US law permitted kidnapping only in the “extraordinary rendition” of terrorist suspects. The American government has for the first time made it clear that the law applies to anyone, British or otherwise, suspected of a crime by Washington. Shami Chakrabarti, director of the human rights group Liberty, said: “This law may date back to bounty hunting days, but they should sort it out if they claim to be a civilised nation.”

I think if American lives are at stake from foreign citizens planning an act of terrorism than America would be by all means be foolish to not try and stop them, but the kidnapping of foreign citizens over crimes such as fraud and tax evasion discredits the American government.

^ exactly. and a lot of americans don't realize that much of our trouble stems from the illegal and immoral acts of bush and cheney -- financial markets are hammering us and its total retribution and abandonment of america. fools who don't see it. other countries can't really act against us militarily but they can totally boycott our culture and products and pull their investments out, which is exactly what they're doing.

They should extradite criminals within normal channels, not by kidnapping.

Any country has the right to try to get away with anything. If a country gets caught they'll also have the right to deal with the consequences.

I'm not saying it's good or it's right. I'm simply saying it's the way things have always been and it's the way thing's will always be.
