no longer being a national Holiday?

My religion is Christian and I think I would be okay with this, people who celebrate could do on a day they have off work.

December 25th as we are reminded every year on this site, is not the day Jesus was born.

Those of us who want , could celebrate his birth when and as we please, we shouldn't need a national holiday to do that.

What you think, good or bad idea?

Good Idea
Bad Idea
No, it would hurt the economy
Other
Take the religion out of it and we can just celebrate the solstice

Ok I`m going to attempt to clear this up. The winter solstice, or midwinter as its also known happens on either the 21st or 22 of december (this inconsistency is due to the calender and not the seasons) it is the longest day of the year in the northern hemisphere. Way back in the dawn of time people used to have more crops left over than they could store and so they had big feasts with what would inevitably go rotten. It has nothing whatsoever to do with pagan gods as some suggest. Nor does it have anything to do with christ, At best its a rebirth ceremony (not a virgin birth) The roman catholic church decided that honouring the birth of christ would take place at this time and forced (Yes forced) the general masses to recognise christ at this time. This is why everyone assumes that the holiday was to celebrate christ. But it isnt. This is why it should remain a celebration of rebirth. and lets face it, at this time of year we all need a break.

I would go further on removing religion from this by being pedantic enough to suggest dropping the word "holiday" for its a truncation of holy day, which it isn`t.

It`s an odd state of affairs when you consider the word solstice is derived from pre christain roman which means sun set (not not literally because it is set to conjugate whatever season comes after it) so winter solstice means literally sun set still in winter.

Odd, then, that an empire which died out nearly 2 centuries ago still influences our actions.

But it should still be a chance to celebrate with friends and family. Everyone else for that matter too.

To clarify the church usurped this celebration because it was the largest of them all, hence moving the birth of christ to the opposite side of the seasons. (tho in my opinion they didnt have a clue when it was, nor am i certain we do)

You would have thought that god would see fit to give the season at least. but I guess "when" doesn`t matter when its just a story.

So wirh rhis in mind the option "No, it would hurt the economy" is a bit redundant, The economy has nothing to do with the religious overlay.

Besides, even if christ did exist, does anyone really believe he would welcome this sumptious period of gluttony and greed?

I say take the religion out of it and then the cult of christianity could celebrate in whatever form it decided.

It would also mean there would be an opportunity to reinvent christmas. think of all the new songs and posters and brands. it would boost the economy :D

Yes, I know all of that, I'm reminded of it every year on this very site. Christians should not need a special day to celebrate the Birth Of Jesus. If it happened in December or July, that's not what I'm saying and it's really irrelevant in my opinion. Those of us who are Christians can celebrate the birth of Christ when they please, those who are not can go on with their lives.

^ Christians should not need a national holiday to celebrate what they believe in.

I don't really think there is that much religion in Christmas these days anyway, I think it was last year or maybe year before, Christmas fell on a Sunday and it was reported that day was the lowest church attendance of the year.

Thats fine Larry, but it`s a bit odd no christians know when their messiah was actually born.Tho the jehovas seem to think you`ve got the year wrong too, but what can u expect from people who believe there are only 144000 places in heaven. odd when you consider several million of them are already dead. i`d imagine heaven was a bit full by now.

I agree that the borth of christ shouldnt be a nation holiday. Bit like all the satanists wanting halloween off work.

Your last comment... does that mean the majority of christians are hypocrites?

Being an amateur student of history, I've learned that Christ *wasn't* actually born on December 25, as is widely believed, but rather at or near the end of the time of the Roman census, which would roughly place it in late March or early April. As I said in an earlier ballot, having the holiday here is nothing more than an excuse for retailers to rake in money that consumers, by and large, *don't have to spend*, hence the massive credit crunch we're in right now.

People need reasons to take breaks other than being sick.

Don't care really.

I just wish people could get over this obsession with having to try to force public and government institutions to have a nativity display. As if having them at every church, thousands of homes, stores and similar isn't enough. Somehow in some people's minds forcing it on everyone somehow makes the holiday more festive and "spiritual".

I'm not into religious dogma of any flavour, but I'm all for celebrating events in the annual cycle.
