The biggest reason for skyrocketting inflation right now is the same reason as it was in the 70's, the oil industry is price gouging. But when people give people things they don't want or need they invariably return that item and thus drive the cost of that item up. So if you find yourself in a position of receiving something you have no intention in using (this is the time of the year for it) just "re-gift" it. Some people insist that this is dishonest or rude but if it's something someone could actually use then it's there's no reason not to do it.

Do we live in a disposable culture?

I regift all the time. A friend gave me an expensive set of vanilla sugar bath stuff. I don't like that fragrance. I like herbal, green fragrances. I re-gave it to a friend who invited me over for Christmas dinner. She was ecstatic--it was her favorite fragrance.

Regifting works great.
