SHOULD BALLOTS CLOSE?

[+] ballot by LCD
ACTIVE Wed Jan 09, 08 - Thu Jan 08, 09

all the good ballots with lots of votes are all closed.

should I just let the ballots open for eternity, and let superusers close those that are out of date, like who is going to win the superbowl in 2003?

yes, good idea
no, bad idea

A lot of times I click in a very interesting ballot only to see that I can't vote on it.

Why not add a bit of code that overrides the ballot expiry date if a ballot gets more than a certain number of votes from *different* users?

Guest votes could be ignored to avoid spamming, perhaps.

It's just another way for certain users to play God with ballots which they don't like. Considering most of the users left here, are Superusers.

Just my two cents, for what it's worth. Which is probably nothing. :)

Yeah, we still have open ballot about John Kerry. I don't know where you find all the room for some of this stuff.

^^ I mean "Yes, put an expiration date on them".

well, the record of who closes them and an option for another users to override the closure will make for a abuse free system.

Let me see if I can implement that. I know I found some ballots that were pretty good.

on another note, we are very close to accepting new members again. it should liven up things a bit around here, but I will do it only after I have a bulletproof system for kicking out abusers.

thanks for your comments.

Since you ask multiple questions I can't give you a yes or no answer.

I think that ballots should close after a year. If the user wants to re-open them at that time they should be allowed to. There are many ballots that were opened for 999 days that should have been closed long ago. Many of these are of the type of "stream of consciousness". They aren't even good ballots just whatever popped into that user's head at the moment. Or they are ballots that are only relevant for a week or two because the question is relevant only for a short time. I have a number of ballots that I opened for 999 days that I was trying to close until that function stopped working. Occasionally I have an active ballot that I reopen but only because it has a lot of activity.

Ballots should default open for a year at most. We could probably do well with a period less than that like 6 month. Most old ballots get very little attention too. Superusers should be able to close these dead ballots.

There are some old ballots, especially joke ones that are great. It would be nice to reopen them.

BTW, a force close does not completely close the ballot. If you search and find one, it doesn't say "closed". It lists the vote count of "0".
