A WORLD WITHOUT RELIGION. FOR BETTER OR WORSE?

[+] serious ballot by jakesnake5
ACTIVE Sun Jan 20, 08 - Mon Jan 19, 09

Make a prediction on what you think the world be like if there was no religion.
No muslims, christians, buddhists, wiccans, ect,.

This is more of a comment based ballot but vote on a choice with a general overview to what you believe.

In a world without religion:

There would be no reason to hate
Everyone would see things from one perspective
There would be more sadness in the world
There would be more happiness in the world
Without "good" or "bad" there would be chaos
Everyone would have more hatred

The biggest problem with people is people. Religion is just an excuse that could be easily replaced.

It is human nature to believe in something outside of ourselves. Atheists SAY they don't believe in God but they pleasantly exist in relative peace because of an ordered society set down on priciples derived from belief in God.

To live in a world where there was no relgion would take an enormous amount of denial and repression. Most would believe in an almighty but never be able to connect with others who believe the same. I believe this would create misery beyond knowing. You can never have a world without siritual beliefs. You can have a world that does not ALLOW spiritual beliefs to be expressed.

Ridding the world of one of its greatest sources of conflict would certainly be beneficial, but I suspect humans would just find other excuses to rip each other to pieces.

BTW the ballot choice "Without good & bad there would be chaos" is foolish in the extreme.

Good and bad - or, for that matter, any other sense of morality - can exist quite independently of religion.

A simple study of the religious affiliation of prison inmates would confirm that.

A moral sense of right and wrong is defined by conscience, not religion.

I seriously doubt that much would change if religion disappeared. Politics is just as adept at spinning lies and leading the foolish by the tune of a fiddle. Nice thought though.

I agree wholeheartedly with what Dingle said.

I want to answer it, but I just can't. I'm sorry. Being Christian is such a part of me, I can't imagine a world with no religion in that sense. But, a world with NO organized religion and one that is just faith based, would be great. Not sure if that made any sense.

Suppose a group of people were raised on a tropical deserted island without any outside influence. Would they hate each other? Would they have shame for not wearing clothing? Would they have morals? Would they try and kill each other? Steal form each other? My guess is they would try and work together to survive. It's too bad we can't live in a world like that.

Well, not necessarily.
Isn't 'religion' a curious human thing, pervasive and almost universal? Couldn't religion even sometimes be called 'fun', adding 'an extra dimension' to many people's lives?
BUT, people Are believing a lot of weird stuff, that they're willing to fight and kill and die for! Well, there are too many humans anyhow. But a world without any religion Would be interesting. No more religion, no more religious conflict, and fighting, and killing.
It's important to avoid excessive conflict nowadays because of the Bombs and the Chemicals and the Germs. And, people can be very mean to one another, because of religion! Mean we can do without.
Just think, no more hell or devils or a harsh God or praying to the wind or idols or slavishly believing all kinds of nonsense and handing over huge sums of money to ignorant preachers and other spokespeople for a God or Gods, no more fanciful angels or unlikely miracles or supposed pronouncements by a God, wouldn't that be some kind of a pleasure and a relief!?
Why are 'believers' of various sorts so sure of themselves?? Could it be that they don't know any better?! It is apparently easy to be 'sucked in' by some religion or other, but Not so easy escape the clutches of what you've been caused to believe!
Perhaps countries could have official and standard 'Departments of Ethics And Desirable Behavior' to instruct the people in useful and reasonable behavior?
No longer dependant on Middle Eastern or any other kind of religious fantasy, the world Might be a better place!
In the meantime, we're stuck with what we've got, and the world Might come to an end, largely because of religion?!

The results are pretty diverse. Interesting.
