They had FAA and other experts on to do a show about what effect regular cell phones have on the airplane. Well, 9/11 conspiracy theorists, you just got busted. I for one always knew you could use the on plane 'seat phones' because I HAVE USED THEM before. They aren't the best service wise, it's hard to hear, but you CAN use them, they are sort of like cell phones from the mid 1990's in terms of quality. Basically they work like this, they don't work like regular cell phones, the phone signals go from the phone to the belly of the plane, where a strong transmitter working on a neutral (safe for the plane) frequency transmits them out, when over land they transmit signals to radio antennae and those signals are transmitted over to phone lines. When the plane is over water, the signals are sent from the same transmitter in the belly of the plane to satellites. This is why these calls are so expensive, they aren't really cell phone calls at all, they are more like radio signals. So, what do you have to say now tin hat peoples?
