A Democratic lawmaker in New Mexico wants to tax televisions and video games to raise funds to fight childhood obesity and improve education in the state, officials said Friday

"The bill proposes levying a one-percent excise tax on the purchase of TVs, video games and video game equipment and would create the 'Leave No Child Inside' fund to receive those revenues," Michael Casaus of the Sierra Club told AFP.

The goals of the bill are to improve the academic performances of our kids, to promote a more healthy lifestyle and to provide our children with outdoor learning experiences, using our state parks and public lands as classrooms," he said.

Bad idea on taxing televisions. Not everybody who buys a TV is using it for video games.

I have conflicting thoughts on this, it doesnt seem fair that people who lead healthy lives and make sure their children do as well have to pay for those who don't, would be nice if more parents would limit TV and video game playing time, encourage their kids to exercise and play outside more, instead of having more government involvement in our lives.

There must be far more people who watch television and play games responsibly than there are the few people who play so much that it hurts them. That's like shooting a whole police line-up to kill the one criminal.

For one, not all TVs are sold for the purpose of playing games and getting fat.

Second of all, if states and schools will quit squandering their money, they'd have the money to promote healthful lifestyles and outdoor activities.

I've done my share of work around public school systems and have seen where the money goes. Athletic departments and football teams get ungodly amounts of money for anything they ask for while the regular PE departments are using 20 year old equipment and the science and agriculture departments are having to do without field trips that get the kids active in outdoor hands-on activities.

No, they don't need more money. They need to learn how to use it more wisely.
