I am neither sex-deprived nor a sailor, and I agree with mojo, that they are beautiful.

I've been to sea several times, and never seen anythign that might pass for one. However, I haven't been everywhere in the ocean by a long shot and, to paraphrase the Bard, "There are things in Heaven and earth which are beyond our philosophy."
mojo, they must've been *really* sex-deprived... 8-O
I think at times it might have been lonley sailors, but on the other hand, there have been species of fish either found still alive, or new species we haven't discovered. A mermaid (if at all real) may or may not look anything like a human on the top
