The NATO mission to Afghanistan was created because of an ally, the U.S, was attacked on 9/11. Canada has done this before in numerous conflicts throughout and lost way more soldiers than 78. Prime Minister Jean Chretien ok'd the troop deployment to Afghanistan. He declined troops to Iraq in his famous words "Proof is proof" (proof regarding WMD in Iraq). It's too bad The U.S Congress didn't require proof but I'm changing topic. Canada, The U.S, Britain and Australia are doing all the toughest fighting which is in the southern region of Kandahar. This is why these countries bare most of the causalities. So your question isn't easy to answer. Was it America sending troops to Iraq, NATO countries not doing their part, Jean Chretien for sending troops, Stephen Harper for sticking with the NATO commitment? It's all of the above.
Whichever brain-dead moe-ron opted to take Mister Bush at his word...
We have a commitment to NATO and that's what it is, but I'm more concerned about our troops being woefully underequiped to do the job they're being asked to do. I personally blame Bastard Mulroney for the deaths of most of the soldiers over there because we don't have any air vehicles. That fucker sold all of our Chinook CH-47s to the Netherlands...he figured he'd rather have the cash than have some basic miltiary equipment. At least the dutch are putting them to good use.
I'm not so sure that Chinook CH-47s were going to make a difference in the war. The war is a ground war because it's taking place in the mountains. If helicopters were the solution the war would be over now. We have a fraction of the amount of troops Russia had and they lost. I don't what the answer to winning this war. My guess is the people need to feel secure enough so they can stand up against the Taliban. At this point they aren't going to stick their necks out. Who can blame them?
