Voted : Yes, I believe before the major religions, woman were treated more equally
In the Celtic cultures at least. Women could get as fat is they wanted to get. Men had to wear a permanent small brass torque around their neck. This was to keep men slender and pretty for the ladies. If a man got fat, he asphyxiated due to the torque. Women, but not men, could divorce for any reason. All this changed with he advent of Christianity. Also, belly dancing in other cultures was orignally performed only by men. This was changed at the time when woman-villifying religions decided arousal by men was a no-no. Mustn't let women experince any pleasure! Women belly dancers are a relatively new thing. I was lucky enough at a rennaisance festival to see a performance of REAL belly dancing done by men. It was hot as hell. Women have nothing on them. Even the men viewers were panting.
^very interesting
Voted : no ,those times were the worst of times for women
I think religion just followed the culture of the times on this issue.
Although Homer made much of the Goddess Athena.
Voted : Yes, they were the best of times for women
