SHOULD THE BRITISH GOVERNMENT ABOLISH HOSPITAL-PARKING CHARGES?

[+] serious ballot by winston
ACTIVE Mon Mar 03, 08 - Tue Mar 03, 09

Is it right to charge people for using hospital car parks? Those in need of regular treatment (cancer patients etc) suffer the most from the levy, with some hospitals charging £4 an hour (roughly $8) for the use of parking facilities. The charge has been called “morally wrong” by angry protestors, fed up with having to pay abnormally high costs for visiting institutions that claim to provide free health care for all citizens.

However, hospital officials state that high costs in urban areas prevent healthy shoppers from occupying needed spaces while splurging on clothes in nearby shopping centres, to the detriment of sick patients who would be unable to park anywhere remotely close to the hospitals buildings. The charges, which provide an important source of annual revenue for the NHS, also enable hospitals to spend more funds on better healthcare for the patients using the parking facilities.

So, should the British government abolish hospital-parking charges?

I think the argument for high parking charges is an exceptionally poor one. Implementing high parking fees for the solitary reason of preventing people from abusing free spaces is a ridiculously poor reason for charging such abhorrent figures of money. Surely the NHS could employ some form of system that requires a ticket handed out by hospital staff to be inserted into a machine that barricades potential freeloaders from leaving, similar to the way that multilevel parking towers operate.

The mere suggestion that a large amount of people would abuse the system is an example of the government’s lack of faith in the British public to show some form of decency and respect. We have become a society that assumes everybody is out for themselves; there is no trust in the community any longer. Everything we do is regulated by corrupt politicians who doubt in our ability to behave in a civil manner.

There is a simple way of keeping shoppers from using the free parking. Each person gets a receipt when they park. If they are a patient, the hospital validates the parking receipt and the person isn't charged. If the receipt isn't validated by the hospital, the person gets charged for parking. Simple answer.
