NEW YORK - Gov. Eliot Spitzer has told senior advisers that he had been involved in a prostitution ring, the New York Times reported Monday, Spitzer is a first-term Democrat and former state attorney general. He is married with three children.

But last week, federal prosecutors in Manhattan filed conspiracy charges against four people accusing them of running a prostitution ring that charged wealthy clients in Europe and the U.S. thousands of dollars for prostitutes.

The Times reported that a person with knowledge of Spitzer's role believes the governor is one of the men identified as clients in court papers.

The case is being handled by prosecutors in the Public Corruption unit of U.S. Attorney Michael Garcia's office. Garcia spokeswoman Yusill Scribner said the office had no comment.

Spitzer has built his political legacy on rooting out corruption, including several headline-making battles with Wall Street while serving as attorney general. He stormed into the governor's office in 2006 with a historic share of the vote, vowing to continue his no-nonsense approach to fixing one of the nation's worst governments.

Time magazine had named him "Crusader of the Year" when he was attorney general and the tabloids proclaimed him "Eliot Ness."

But his stint as governor has been marred by several problems, including an unpopular plan to grant driver's licenses to illegal immigrants and a plot by his aides to smear Spitzer's main Republican nemesis.

Spitzer had been expected to testify to the state Public Integrity Commission he had created to answer for his role in the scandal, in which his aides are accused of misusing state police to compile travel records to embarrass Senate Republican leader Joseph Bruno.

Spitzer had served two terms as attorney general where he pursued criminal and civil cases and cracked down on misconduct and conflicts of interests on Wall Street and in corporate America. He had previously been a prosecutor in the Manhattan District Attorney's Office, handling organized crime and white-collar crime cases.

His cases as state attorney general included a few criminal prosecutions of prostitution rings and into tourism involving prostitutes.

If true, should he step down? I think he should, another case of a Politican not practcing what he preaches and points a judgmental finger at others who behaves the same way.

Yes, he should step down.
No, he should not step down.

COMMENTS:
Voted : No, he should not step down.
Worse has been done by men in higher office. As long as he doesn't conduct job malfeasance, nothing can be said or done. I'm personally shocked that this wasn't put out when he was running fr office.

It serves him right. He was behind using State resources to spy on State Senator Joe Bruno and others. He's a snake.

Yes, Spitzer should resign and I'll state here and now why:

1. If a Republican is busted for the same thing, many Democrats would be yelling from the highest mountain for his/her resignation.

2. Spitzer went after others who committed the same act with great zeal and rabid dog intentions to prosecute them or should I say, prostitute them.

3. He is a lying piece of sh*t and his wife could be infected with some disease (aids) attributed to his sexual gratification.

4. Whether he was set up by his enemies (and he has many) or not, that is not the point, if you know you have enemies, why give them this huge gift on a silver platter? (This man is a Harvad Graduate and instead of allowing the HEAD that benefited from that education, he elected to allow the little HEAD (the dummy) guide him into a situation that without a doubt will destroy his political career and perhaps his marriage).

Therefore, step down you pathetic, hypocrite, disgusting, lying loser and for those he put behind bars for the same offense should have something to say about their prosecution and if apply, incarceration...011

The only reason I feel this way (assuming there are not more extenuating details yet to be uncovered) is because of that guy that lied, started wars, pardoned convicted cronies, spent the taxpayers wealth with abandon (not on them) and is yet to answer for any of it, (amoung other questionable activities) while it may seem this guy ought to step down, I'll leave it up to him and just sit back and watch the "show"...
