There are usually two sides to every story. If they believed this guy, they're stupid. You should clear the air with those he told and present the fact that you were not even in town. That alone might make them see this guy for what he is.

I tend to keep to myself, so if I'm actually talking with someone it will almost always be someone I know and trust. I usually believe these types of people without question. One thing I won't do, however, is spread any information until I know for sure.

I've been the "victim" of rumors and I sense those who wish to believe unfounded rumors are usually envious, jealous, or less "talented" types who feel they need to fabricate fallacies to compensate for their shortcomings...

I go to the source and ask for facts. But there are not a whole lot of rumors where I work.

It's amazing how people can act psycho just because one person says something.

You should probably tell people where you work in whatever mode you feel most comfortable (email, face-to-face or whatever) the facts, and then not worry about it.
