HOW MUCH DO YOU PAY IN PROPERTY TAXES?

[+] serious ballot by patch22us
ACTIVE Mon Mar 10, 08 - Thu Mar 20, 08

Another ballot prompted this one.

While I really don't know all that much about how property taxes are calculated or what they cover, I do know that they seem pretty exorbinant.

I know that in Greenwich Connecticut, one family I know intimately pays an incredible amount in property taxes every year, for a home that is not even a full-time residence. Their property taxes are something like $45,000 per year. In another town on Long Isand, I THINK it's about the same, so it can't just be Connecticut.

What the heck does that get you? What do property taxes cover? How much do you pay in property taxes?

$25,000
$30,000
$35,000
$40,000
$45,000
$50,000
$0
$650

I do not own a home.
I do not pay rent to a landowner.
I am free.

A feeling I wouldn't trade for anything.

A little less than $650 actually, for a home on 13 acres.

^ my dad also lives in rural area with about 20 acres and his tax is below one thousand dollars.

I actually just realized that this could be somewhat of a personal question. Sorry! :)

^^ wow, $650 for 13 acres? I gotta come live near you!

it's amazing the difference in property taxes from state to state. When I was in California, there was this law that froze property taxes at the level at which the property was purchased.

that meant a 10,000 sqft. hollywood mansion with tennis courts that was owned by same family/corporation for a long time would pay $200/yr, when a starter tract home would pay $3000.

not fair.

^ yeah it depends on the area, the taxes are much higher in the City of Elmira than the rural area that my dad lives, in the smaller towns and villages just few miles away that are getting all the malls and shopping centers , the taxes are outrageous

Most of the 'property tax' on our house goes to the school district. Next, is the hospital district. Both entities very necessary.

However, we pay nowhere near $45,000.
