It's not considered taboo to have multiple close friends with whom you share your intimate feelings, why is it considered taboo to have multiple romantic parters at the same time?

Other than STDs, there's no very good reason as long as all parties agree.
Jealosy. Maybe natural selection favors monogamy, and jealous people were more likely to survive.

I've said this before here. If Deity should ever grace me again with the love and attentions of a woman, I'm not about to go window-shopping. Affection is a damned hard commodity to come by.

Back in the day when women and children were considered the property of men, there was a social obligation for monogamy. I don't there should be so much of a taboo nowadays, as long as all parties are emotionally comfortable and honest with each other... Personally though, I would find it hard to pull off...
