DOES THE NEWS MEDIA INTENTIONALLY EXXAGERATE?

I used to go to this news summary website a few times a day. What I noticed was that the headlines on that summary site, were alarmist. Almost sensational. When I would then read the "real" news story, it was never as bad as the screaming headline on the news summary site.

Today, I saw this article:

"Retail sales plunge by 0.6 percent"

WASHINGTON - Consumers, battered by plunging home prices and a credit crunch, stayed away from the malls in February, pushing retail sales down by a larger-than-expected amount. It was another worrisome sign that the country could be falling into a recession.

0.6 percent and they use the word plunge? Not even 1 percent. 6/10ths of a percent is plunging?

I stopped going to that news summary site and I noticed that I am not as stressed out.

Does the "news" media exxagerate and create problems and crisises that actually don't really exist?

They try to be dramatic, the worst news makes the best coverage I guess is their thinking

Yes, because the emphasis for the "media" is more now on how to make money for the corporations that own them. The more readers or viewers you bring in, the more money they make. That's why any sex scandal is going to have a longer news cycle than war and famine in Africa - murders of young blonde white girls are given much more coverage than any other crime. Political coverage is more on "race" and how much did Hilary cry than on policy. And Paris Hilton and Brittany Spears will always be on the forefront.

To answer your question, anything to catch attention and bring a viewer in is worth it - that's why news is made with soundbytes and alarmism, more than fact or truth.

Whenever it suits their needs. Or the needs of their corporate masters.
