COMMENTS:
She has to appear innocent and vulnerable and unable to defend herself. It helps if she's good looking, too.
And if a guy is not an asshole, he will always defend her if she's sleeping with him.

There are 3 motivations:
1. She's vulnerable and needs someone to stand up for her.
2. Defending her makes you look good and maybe you'll get laid.
3. If she's your girl, she is a reflection of the guy's worth. (The better the girl, the better the guy). So if someone says something nasty about the girl, the guy will stand up for her, because the less people think of her, the less people will think of him. She's an investment for him.
I know that sounds like objectifying, but that's how guys are.

If she's my friend and I know her well enough to think she would appreciate my intervening, I'll step in. Otherwise, I let her fight her own battles out of respect. I just have to bite my toungue because I always want to help. Different women have different attitudes about this sort of thing. Let the guys you know know what you'd like.

Unless someone is threatening to be violent, guys should mind their own business instead of "defending" women they don't even know.
