Barack Obama, D-Ill., said on Friday that he made repeated lapses of judgment in dealing with an indicted Chicago real estate developer, Antoin "Tony" Rezko, and acknowledged that Rezko had raised more money for his political campaigns than he had previously disclosed. Rezko, who is on trial on federal corruption charges, had raised as much as $250,000 for Obama during his first three political races. Previously, Obama's campaign estimated that Rezko had raised about $150,000 for him. In an interview with The Chicago Tribune that was posted on the newspaper's Web site on Friday evening, Obama said he had made a mistake by engaging in a real estate deal with Rezko. The deal involved a new home Obama and his family bought in Chicago in 2005; Rezko acquired an adjacent parcel of land to help complete the sale. "The mistake was he had been a contributor and somebody involved in politics," Obama said. Voters concerned about his judgment, Obama said, should view the transaction as "a mistake in not seeing the potential conflicts of interest." For months, Obama has sought to put to rest questions about his ties to Rezko, who is accused of shaking down companies seeking business with Illinois. Obama is not part of the case against Rezko.
