I'm confused about tipping too, I never know the right amount or who should receive.
Voted : I don't know either
The only person I 'tip' is the man who delivers my food from the local kebab house, and that is only to ensure that he feels no malice towards me, and thereby prevents my chilli sauce from becoming contaminated with certain bodily fluids I would rather avoid digesting.

I don't think that people who get paid a lot should get tips. Those should be for those that need them.
You should always be careful to tip appropriately and to tip service staff of any type. Many people who work in restaurants like the wait staff do not even get the minimum wage (its legal) for this. Their primary income comes from tips. For taxi drivers it is similar. Usually they pay the taxi cab company a certain amount of money to "rent" the cab for their shift. They have to make enough to pay that back plus a cut of the fares back to the cab company. Depending on how busy they are they might not even break even for the day. The amount of money they are tipped can make a massive difference in how much they make or even if they break even for the day. That is how much difference your tip to them can make. Earning something for the day or nothing. Most service staff get their primary income from tips. The idea is that this will prompt them to give the best service. If I were the cab drive that you only gave 10 cents to, I might not have done what he did, but I certainly would have been pissed off and would never pick you up as a fare again. There are lots of guides online as well as books you can buy.

LOL at that choice. some people act like you owed them a tip. I feel bad for people working at fast food restaurants who are not a part of this gimme economy. I guess if his service was adequate, you could have explained to him that you only had xx $ on you, and that you are going to walk the rest of the way. In my experience, (I doubt that applies in New york) there is a good chance a reasonable person would have given you a ride the rest of the way for free. or am I dreaming?

I am probably. come live in a small town. You would be shocked at how nice people are, when they are not under the city pressures.

I never pay any attention to percentages or such, I give tips according to how good the service was. If they're snotty and give bad service, I don't care how much they're getting paid; they don't get a tip. And I don't worry about it because I won't be back to get the same snotty attitude and bad service. If they're nice and give great service, I'll give them a tip big enough to make them drool.
I didn't give him a 10 cent tip, I gave him the $11 because the fare had hit $10.90 so I just gave him the $11. He just expected a tip I guess. But why? His job is to drive the Cab and the passenger is paying a pretty high fare for that, so I guess I'm not sure why the passenger should then have to pay more in the form of a tip. Besides, many of the Cab driver in NY rent out the Cab for their shift, so once their cost for renting the Cab is reached, all the money they make is theirs. It's confusing to know what to do.
Voted : I NEVER tip ANYONE
I've never been tipped nor do I expect it, so bugger them.
If the waiter cant do his job, then he wont get much. Simple.
