COMMENTS:
get one of those suspension swings. hanging yourself upside down will do some amazing stuff, although temporary. depending on age, you might get better with therapy. over 40 (like me) then it's pretty much downhill from there.

Yes! If it is chronic, sorry to say, there is no alternative but to see a professional. Either a Chiropractor or a Doctor that also specializes in muscular and/or joint injuries. Due to sports injuries, I have long-term lower back problems, specifically hip, tail bone and now...Groin pulls. It all depends on the nature of the injury, but most medications and treatment options only provide temporary relief. I've been to the Chiropractor regularly for the past 2 years. One of his methods is to use these electric diode type things. He puts them alternatively on eihter side of the injured area and by doing so, it sends a mild electric shock to that area, which causes the muscles to strenthen becuase they are responding to the stimuli. If it's a Disc out of place, surgery may be the only solution, but they can usually tell that up front.

I went to a chiropractor after I blew out my back in HS. Did me a lot of good then. If you're in this boat, my best thoughts for you.
dear god, if you are in your teens, and you are seeing a cairopractor, you are going to have serious problem when u get old. do some real research before your next appt and see an md for opinion , nobody,s going to convince me that they are all a bunches of quacks. western medicine only treat the symptoms, and dismiss the cause. examine why you are having this problem, and stop doing it!

I just came from the Chiropractor. I have had a bad lower back for about 15 years now. I live with the pain. Most of the time it is bearable enough. but as I did to it two days ago, I made a turning movement the wrong way and it drop me to my knees like a ALI knockdown, it also brought a tear to my eye from the pain. When my back gets like that, I make an appointment with my Chiropractor. I have thought about seeing an O.S.S. (Orthopaedic & Spine Specialists). Someone I work with went to them and they gave him a shot in the spine (Like an Epidural, women get when they go into labor). But as long as the Chiropractor can take care of it it's a lot easier on my Co-Pay. Now, if you are looking for a Chiropractor, Ask Family, friends and co-workers for a good one. The one I have now is really good. I went to one before this one who couldn't "crack" my lower back and keep wanting to see me at least every week. Just so he can keep on collecting. The guy I saw today will do a follow up on Saturday. And that will be all. He will ask if I want to make anapointment in a month. And I will tell him that I will come back when I am in pain again. That can be Two weeks, Two Months or when ever, The last time I had tears because of my pain was 17 months ago. So good luck... I FEEL YOUR PAIN
I put a address on my Blog on my userpage, if you want to find out more about O.S.S. and what they are all about.
Well of course I see a Doctor LCD. :) Who do you think did the surgery? But a Chiropractor is in fact the best route to go for regular maintenance. Do you think a Doctor does therapeutic treatments? Of course not. They send you to a Physical Therapist and when it comes to back issues that are muscular, they do the very same things a Chiropractor does. You might be confusing nerve damage with muscular strain. For muscular strains that cause pain, you go to a Chiropractor. Did you play sports when you were younger? If you did, then you know that depending on the sport, regular Chiropractic therapy is common place.

well I am not going to get into the discussion here. I would say that I studied years in martial arts, plus few motorcycle crashes (one over 80mph) did my body in. It was fine when I was in my twenties, but it catches up to you when you grow old. patient: Doctor, it hurts when I do this. doctor: well, don't do that!

Okay, but I think you're making much more of it than actually exists, at least in my case. I don't know one single club member that does not see a Chiropractor for regular maintenance. Chiropracty is not necessarily for major problems...in fact, for more serious issues, they would refer you back to a specialist. Chiropractors mostly try to correct fairly minor strains. Hence, why I suggested to Wildcard that if it is more serious, such as a Disc out of place, etc., that it may require surgery. That falls outside the area of expertise of a Chiropractor. People will go to a Massage Therapist when they're in pain, or, they'll use heating pads, but they won't go to an expert, such as a Chiropractor, who can repair that minor damage. If Wildcard has serious injuries, then he should see an expert.

Don't use a Chiropractor. Instead, strong anti-inflammatory's and bed rest is best.
What if it becomes a ruptured disc? A strong anti-inflamatory and bed rest are only ways to temporarily feel better. He's asking about severe and debilitating back pain...that to me sounds serious and I don't think pills and resting in Bed are the answer. Go to a Doctor.
Thanks to everyone who responded! I've had back problems since my late teens. I've already had back surgery once before for a herniated L2 disc which took place shortly before my 20th birthday. Back then I tried all sorts of Physio. treatments and the electric diodes patch mentioned. Now I am late 20's and this latest episode of pain and suffering has lasted about a month now, this time from a bulging L3 disc. So far I have been to my doctor, tried Acupuncture, Physiotherapy, I live on anti-inflam's/painkillers and spend most days right now just trying to keep the pressure off of my spine. I've never seen a Chiropractor before, always had reservations about going to see one, although I may have to reconsider that soon. I'll look into the suspension swing idea. Someone has already told me I should try to hang from a metal bar. But if things don't improve soon it may be back to see my Orthopedic surgeon and more surgery -man I hope it doesn't come to that...
LCD - sounds like you are lucky to be alive, seriously!

Surgery as a very last resort.
a transportable morphine drip. one of those jazzy little numbers that's about the size of an i-pod. strap it on and let the drip do its magic. if that's not your bag mainlining cocaine should do the trick.

Unfortuneatly for me, that's the only option left..
