SPORTS INJURIES: ARE THEY WORTH THE RISK?

All physically demanding sports have a high degree of risk for bodily injury. Some of the more high-impact sports are notorious for the cause of bodily injury, weather those injuries be mild or extensive.

Tennis can cause serious damage to your elbow joints, as well as to your ankle and knee joints. Baseball is known to cause injury to your shoulder joints, in particular, Rotator Cuff syndrome. Football causes major injuries to your back, arms, legs and hips.

Soccer in particular is known to potentially cause sprains in your back, legs and basically, all over your body. Because you have to be very limber and have to contort your body in "unnatural" ways in Soccer, groin injury, head injury, ankle, knee and hip injuries are very common place.

Given this threat, in your opinion, is playing the sport worth the potential injury? Keep in mind that Sports Medicine is extremely progressive and is based more on prevention techniques and maintenance than it is on radical correction (e.g. muscle relaxation exercises, massage techniques, chiropractic maintenance, etc.)

So is it worth it?

Yes, given the risk to life-ling injury has been minimized, it is worth it
No, I would be afraid
Depends on the price you put on the sport
Yes, if I would make millions of dollars

I'd rather take the risk than watch a sport on Television and wonder or pretend how great it would be to be playing that sport.

but I guess it depends on how much money you have to see the specialists for your injuries, and how intelligent you are 036

Baseball 'till I was 18.
Softball 'till I was 37.
Not to mention I was a Umpire for Little league, ASA softball, American Legion Baseball, and a I also did a adult league in Queens New York.

No wonder my back is out of whack

If it's something you really enjoy or if you are one of the lucky few that get paid 1000x too much money to do it, then yeah. Driving a car is also dangerous etc etc etc

Well thanks for the compliment LCD. Intelligent like as in having numerous Motorcycle accidents before you realized you shouldn't ride a Motorcycle? :)

But then, I'm not as sports-crazed as I used to be. I've torn up parts of myself playing baseball back in my Salad Daze. My right shoulder and hip will be in need of replacement inside of ten years, and my right knee's not much better, shape-wise. Back when I played almost daily, regardless of weather, I accepted the pain and damage as part of the price of excellence in the sport, as I'm sure many athletes do.

I guess I've gotten away with it up to now, so that's my bias.

Voted : Depends on the price you put on the sport
It depends on how much you enjoy and gain from the sport involved.

And like has been said, it could apply to sports such as racing, skydiving, mountain climbing, etc... The rush of doing some of that stuff is definitely worth it for those who have enough training to minimize the risk.

Yep! I've had numerous injuries from skiing, climbing, motorcycling, etc. but I'd rather stay active than wrap myself in cotton wool.

On a professional level, yes, as a "full time" pastime, no...
