IS THIS A CASE OF A TRUE RACIAL CONTROVERSY?

[+] serious ballot by patch22us

When Vogue announced its April cover starring LeBron James and Gisele Bundchen, the magazine noted with some fanfare that James was the first black man to grace its cover.

But the image is stirring up controversy, with some commentators decrying the photo as perpetuating racial stereotypes. James strikes what some see as a gorilla-like pose, baring his teeth, with one hand dribbling a ball and the other around Bundchen’s tiny waist.

It’s an image some have likened to “King Kong” and Fay Wray.

It conjures up this idea of a dangerous black man, said Tamara Walker of Philadelphia.

Annie Leibovitz shot the 6-foot-9 NBA star and the 5-foot-11 Brazilian model for the cover and an inside spread. Vogue spokesman Patrick O’Connell said the magazine “sought to celebrate two superstars at the top of their game” for the magazine’s annual issue devoted to size and shape.

“We think Lebron James and Gisele Bundchen look beautiful together and we are honored to have them on the cover,” he said.

James told The (Cleveland) Plain Dealer he was pleased with the cover, saying he was “just showing a little emotion.”

“Everything my name is on is going to be criticized in a good way or bad way,” James told the paper. “Who cares what anyone says?”

But magazine analyst Samir Husni believes the photo was deliberately provocative, adding that it “screams King Kong.” Considering Vogue’s influential history, he said, covers are not something that the magazine does in a rush.

“So when you have a cover that reminds people of King Kong and brings those stereotypes to the front, black man wanting white woman, it’s not innocent,” he said.

O’Connell, the Vogue spokesman, declined further comment.

Voted : No, this is just a magazine cover
Personally, I've never heard any comparison made between King Kong and a Black man. I actually think the people making the fuss are the ones being racist.

Think about it. In a sense, what they're saying is Lebron James is just a big Black man with no mind of his own. The man let them take the photo for the cover and he's not an idiot! If it bothered him, wouldn't he have spoken up?

It does have that King Kong look to it, which isn't very appealing, but I don't see it as racist either.

I really didn't get the allusion until Sunday past. This is all, IMO, the delusion of a few small minds.

Even Lebron is dismissing the "controversy." It bothers me more that people are acting like Lebron doesn't have a mind of his own and almost like he's too stupid to notice something like that.

I was waiting for this ballot to show up! lol Anyone who thinks this is racist can kiss my creamy white ass. Lebron approved the pictures for godsake. And he makes that pose to the camera every damn time he dunks. And Giselle is just her usual hot model self. How is this even remotely racist?

He is still just a kid.
And may I say that he is one of the VERY few star athletes that come from a single parent home that doesn't seem to have extra baggage so to speak of. He is doing well, on and off the court.

Voted : It is an example of mocking a racial stereotype...
There has been many images that portrays Black Athletes in a negative light, this is not the first time...

Dennis Rodman was on a sports cover magazine with horns coming out of this forehead and red serpent tongue shooting out of his mouth, Charles Barkley, Kareem, and other Black Athletes in the sport of Football and Boxing constantly are depicted as being aggressive, angry, scary, intimidating and an image for White America to be afraid of...

The practice of depicting people of color as a group to fear is common practice in this country. Blacks beyond Athletes are almost always depicted in a negative light to fit the stereotypes to keep the fear alive...

Now, should James be more socially and racially astute to these fact? The almighty dollar maybe the culprit the prevents him from removing the blinders...

BTW: For those who are not directly impacted by this racist practice and/or have not witnessed relatives/friends who experiences this racist practice, feel free to disagree...

Who gives a fuck? LeBron doesn't so why should we.

There's always some do good fuck who wants to stir up racial shit so they can look good denouncin' it. Blahhh, one day colour won't matter, one way or the other.
by britvic55 on Sat Mar 29, 08 1:44am [+]

I know, that's my point. Barbara_Baby_Cakes pointed out an example with Dennis Rodman, but if Dennis Rodman approved it or didn't find it offensive, so? How do horns represent a racial stereotype about Black people Barbara_Baby_Cakes? The use of the horns and a serpent tounge could be used for any race and I've seen it so for White people. So? Is it racist if it's with a Black person, but not a white person? That's the problem!

Anyway, you say it could be money that made him not have an issue with it. Once again, that's like saying he is some dummy who can't think for himself.

The more I read about this, the more I see that the people screaming racism are in effect, being racist! LeBron has even said that he is very insulted that people are making this fuss because like he points out...he's not an idiot!
by patch22us on Sat Mar 29, 08 1:00pm [+]

Right on patchy. Barbie cakes is off on one again. How the fuck is that magazine cover racist!? His pose? haha! Why does race have to be an issue with everything. It could of been a white guy in the same pose, and not one of you would of thought he looked like a gorilla. But its a black man. Who is the racist now?
by Cantona on Sat Mar 29, 08 2:33pm [+]

^Like I stated above, feel free to disagree, as long as others perceive this in a negative light, they just like yourselves have the right to speak out about it...

Everytime someone has an issue with how they or people who look like themselves are depicted as they perceive in a negative light, there almost always people criticizing them for objecting...

Also, I never stated that James is an idiot, however, it is his choice to ignore what others seems to see and yes, money sometime blind those who are making a arsehole full of it...

Now, with all that said, again, feel free to continue to disagree...

Because maybe it's gotten ridiculous? I don't know. But you used devil horns and a devil tounge or something about Dennis Rodman. What does that have to do with a racial stereotype? I just don't get that at all. You can put devil horns and a devil tounge on the picture of any personn of any race...how is that racist?

People depict blonds as being dumb all the time...so should I get all worked up and say it's somehow race based, since natural blonds are almost always White?

I guess my point is that it that it seems like it's almost a joke now with people getting offended.

If LeBron James likes the picture, isn't that what matters, since it's a picture of him and he does not represent all people of color?

Anyway, if you can explain the Dennis Rodman thing to me, maybe I'd understand it better.
