Jude's Barbershops owner Thomas Martin is taking his case to Lansing to restore his cut-and-a-beer service. After local authorities cut off his free-beer promotion, he turned to a state legislator, who has asked Attorney General's office to research whether giving customers a beer violates state law. "It's just a nice benefit," Thomas said. "It's like the old-fashioned service." He has 11 shops--"Where Guys Get Their Hair Cut"--in the Grand Rapids area. Thomas Martin has received conflicting opinions from lawyers, judges and police officers about the legality of this issue. State Rep. Kevin Green, R-Wyoming, said he didn't have a problem with Martin's clients having a beer. In this tough economy, small businesses have had to be creative to draw and keep customers. He didn't think customers would look to get drunk. But beers are for clients, not barbers, he noted. "They do have sharp scissors in their hands."
