ARE THE OLYMPICS FAIR "GAME" FOR PROTESTS?

[+] serious ballot by patch22us

The people with the grip on political power seem intent on silencing a growing majority who want to use the upcoming Olympic games as a means to focus attention on the Chinese governments abuse of power.

From the News:
A small group of Danish protesters dressed in orange were at the headquarters of the Hellenic Olympic Committee, several hours before the flame was due to reach Athens.

"We are here to protests the state of human rights in China and to speak out for those who cannot speak for themselves in China," Maja Groen told The Associated Press.

The group, led by Danish artist Jens Galschioet, said it had tried to follow the torch relay from central Greece to Athens but were kept back by police.

"It was really annoying that the Greek police did not allow us to follow the flame," Groen said. The flame is due to arrive in Athens at about 1 p.m. EDT after traveling on the final leg of the Greek relay.

Greek officials kept details of the route's Athens leg under tight wraps fearing a repeat of protests by human rights campaigners and opponents of China's violent crackdown in Tibet that marred Monday's flame-lighting ceremony in Ancient Olympia.

Police said the precise route was not being made public for security reasons.

The torch will be handed over to Beijing officials on Sunday.

I may be wrong in this, but in the West, we're supposedly free and celebrate freedom, yet silence it at the same time. This quote from the article in particular bothered me: "fearing a repeat of protests by human rights campaigners and opponents of China's violent crackdown in Tibet that marred Monday's flame-lighting ceremony in Ancient Olympia."

Don't they have their priorities all turned around? Do you feel that the Olympic games are "fair game" for exposing injustice?

Yes, they are
No, they are not
Injustices should be exposed no matter where it lives...

Voted : Yes, they are
absolutely.

Beijing was a bad place for it. why don't they just have it in North Korea or Sudan?

I am hoping to see some real focus on the human rights issue this summer, enough to make China embarassed enough to change.

boy I am being positive todayMAG_rofl

I think they are because they are games for all nations and as such, are the perfect platform to raise issues that may not be raised or receive public notice otherwise. I don't think it's right that China acts like they somehow deserve special attention because they want to be legitimized and perceived as a progressive and open society. They're anything but.

If China was smart, they would have let the peaceful demonstrations in Tibet continue without their use of force. That would have shown them to be truly open.

The problem with China is that they'd rather have control over their people than looked at as progressive and open.

Anyway, the Olympics are fair game for protest to me, but I can understand Greek police not allowing protesters to follow the torch route for safety reasons.

You really want to see lack of freedom to protest, wait till the protests start in China.
