COMMENTS:
the last comment should have read. " Hey, i've read mine and can actually hold a rational debate about religion without resorting to being a spelling nazi to cover my ignorance. LCD if your going to limit the length of choices then surely you shouldn't allow me to keep typing.
Voted : I have no idea...
But I do feel the need to call my builder, regarding the status of my igloo.
You can't find anything else to make a ballot about? I have a Bible that I don't read very often, but I have read it in the past. It gives me comfort and strength when I'm in need. I don't have to sit here everyday reading my Bible to believe in God. If you don't believe in God, then that's your loss, but calling something as sacred as the Bible "stupid" is a bit childish, don't you think?
^I should've used the word "disrespectful" instead of "childish." Sorry.
Well to be fair forgetmenot its in the news. So its kind of current affairs and it did shock me. In an age where religion is in decline in the majority of the industrialised countries. Theres america (and forgive me for saying this) heading back towards the dark ages. I've seen what religion does to people. How it corrupts. How it makes people kill in the name of their particular brand of god. How its stops abused children from speaking out for fear of going to hell. I was brought up a christian and had to watch my gran go blind and slowly lose her mind because she couldn't read her bible at night. I read for her. But she only wanted certain parts read. She had them marked on a card. a list of perhaps 20 chapters that reassured her. the rest scared her half to death. What hurt her the most was that I wasn't going to heaven because I decided I didn't believe a word of it. So You see I'm not without understanding of the way it makes people feel. So the word stupid is wrong. The word I should have used is insidious. Remember that though its sacred to you its not to me. Do you consider the koran sacred? Or the Torah? The bible is filled with contradictions. Its horrifiv in many parts and is incredibly sexist. Can a God be sexist? I find that incredibly unlikely dont you? Why is god a he? At best I would imagine a non breeding creature to be at least asexual. But clearly according to the bible its a he. How is that reassuring? Did you, like my gran, just read the bits that appealed to you? Or do you find the nameless wife of lots fate reassuring in some way. Or how about the reassuring story of the scores of children ripped apart by 2 she bears for calling one of gods chosen one names? Or how about the one where a man is chased by an angry mob who want to kill him and he runs to a friends house and his friend sends his wife out to be brutaly raped and murdered in order to placate their anger. God was ok with this its a fair trade. Just explain how you find any of this reassuring? If you want me to find the relevent verses then I will. and many many like them.
Quirk, you make a lot of good points that are hard to argue with. As for your Gran wanting you to read certain parts of the Bible to her because it brought her comfort, then that part of the Bible served it's purpose and brought comfort to your Gran in her time of need.
I called you forgetmenot eep sorry, not sure what I was thinking there. dont read anything into that... :D
